Voting, Knitting, Fall, Fungus, and Civil Rights

Voted today and have my fingers and toes crossed, that issues 1 and 2 in Ohio pass.  I'm tired of the government telling women what they can do with their bodies.  What happens should be between the woman and her physician.  The far right needs to stop with all the disinformation.

The Sherbert Baby Ghan/blanket is coming along, but slowly.  Got the large center pink section completed and am now working on the mint green section you see on the far right.  So, 2/3rds of the blanket is done.  Been doing lots of yard work, so haven't spent much time knitting of late.  But, now the fall clean up is almost complete.
I don't tend to decorate except for Christmas, but do like to change out the placemats seasonally for the various holidays.  Pumpkins have been out for about a month for phase one of the fall decor.
Had some pretty mums on the front stoop, until just a few days ago.  After several hard freezes they have gone by wayside.  Too bad, they did provide some color.
In my last post I posted an interesting fungus I spotted one day on my walk, here again is another one.......totally different.  These, I think are far more "Normal"?  Looks like Chinese writing almost on the cap of the mushroom.
Another must read book.  A good follow up after A Fever in the Heartland, that I blogged about in the previous blog post.  This will be an eye opener for many.  Even though as a young teen I saw some things on the nightly news, I did not see how truly cruel White Men in Power were.  Birmingham Alabama was a very dangerous, poor city with one of the lowest literacy rates in the country.  973 children....yes children were arrested by Bull Connor in a single demonstration.
Wanting to absorb a bit more of this horrible time, I watched the movie The Long Walk Home about The Montgomery Bus Boycott.  It's very moving.  Whoopi Goldberg and Sissy Spacek were both phenomenal in their rolls.  If you're much younger than me, you might not have seen these 2 historic events during your lifetime.

My steps for October are down considerably and I'm still not doing yoga or planks due to the elbow injury.  Sigh.....I did what seemed like lots of yard work, but that doesn't necessarily give you lot of steps.  And now, the weather is getting cold...so, I'm not optimistic about steps increases.  On a good note, I did manage a handfull of days with over 14K in steps for the day.

I'm continuing to blog about my 2 wk tour of The UK

  1. I think it's important to learn more about historic events, even recent ones, they can teach us so much. There's lots of mushrooms popping up here too, I don't know much about them but I find them fascinating.

  3. ...my wife and I lived in Cleveland and then Toledo in the late '60s and early '70's. We enjoyed Ohio, but have been dismayed to see how its politics has gotten so bad! But good for the Ohio voters!!!

    1. I know exactly what you mean Tom. The Gerrymandering is horrible and people like Vance, Gym Jordan etc make me ill; but yesterday the yes vote....finally some good news.

  4. The fungi are simply amazing.
Good luck with your yard work... it seems like it never ends during the Autumn winds blowing leaves every which way.

  7. The fungi and my mums have been affected by recent cold spells, but the leaves are taking their time to fall. I'm still enjoying the trails and have been getting outside for all my runs.

So happy about Ohio and Virginia. Maybe their is hope for 2024?

  8. It would be good if we could from our mistakes, or learn from historical mistakes. The world is still full of hatred, sadly. Nature can still give us pleasure and is so important. Making sure I do something I enjoy every day is my new mantra. Life is short.
    Best wishes

    1. You're right about life being short and doing something you enjoy each day. I totally agree about learning from history; but sadly it seems many don't.

    1. We get small ones after rains in our yard, but we've never had anything that looked like this or was this large; so when I spotted it during one of my walks; I had to stop and get a picture.

  11. Sandy - thanks so much for your recent visit to my blog and your kind comments! I will definitely add the book and the movie to my lists. Love your fungi photo - I am wanting to do a whole blog post on fungi pictures I took this summer - watch for it! Have a wonderful weekend!

    1. How sweet of you Duta. I am able to walk some places for errands, but most of the places I need to go aren't within walking distance. I remember how neighborhoods used to be self contained and were walkable and then they started building all the offices, groceries, shopping centers etc farther away and that ended the neighborhood shopping.

  13. The voting results are worth celebrating, yes? I think Ohio did women's rights right (if I'm right. And I'm usually left).
    Keep on keeping on, friend.

This seems to be the season for mushrooms. I should take pictures of the ones I see on my walk. The one in your photo is very unusual as is the one in your last post. That one is a beauty. Well, was a beauty. No doubt it's gone now.

    1. It's been an unusual year for the fungi. I don't remember seeing so many interesting ones in other years. I guess it's because of the weather...and maybe I'm paying more attention on my walks. Hope you'll post some pictures of the ones you see on your walks as well. Granny M.

    1. I'm at a point where I wish I had garden less, lol. Fewer flower beds would make less work; but I put them all in long ago when I was younger and more physically capable.

Ohio voting results have been darn good, from what I've read. I'm so pleased that with respect to bodily autonomy, women in OH will not be treated as second class citizens.

  18. History has a problem of repeating itself so it is a good thing to read about and learn historical facts. It actually seems like we are doomed to repeat them over and over.

  19. The fungi/mushrooms are likely growing from a tree root that is deep underground.

  20. Thanks for visiting my blog! That's going to be a very pretty blanket. We were happy to hear about the Ohio vote, too. I've never seen so many mushrooms as I have on my walks this fall, and now I am wondering what caused this. Hope your elbow heals soon and you can get back to yoga and planks again.

    1. I don't know why either, but somehow assume it's weather related that we're seeing so many fungi this year. Glad you were happy about our vote here in Ohio. I'm hoping more states get these types of issues on the ballots, because I think that's the prevalent feeling across the country. It's just the far right politicians that are an issue with their far right judges.

  22. Great progress on the sherbet blanket and the pumpkin placemats look wonderful on your table.
The book and film recall such horrible times and yet we don't seem to learn from history. We need a lot more love and respect for each other today.
