If you've seen many of my afghans, you know I rarely make one that has a pattern. In part because I'm using up donated squares made from lots of different people and rarely have many of the same color or design. This is obviously the exception to the norm. They were squares from the different people, but I did have multiples of the color or similar color. The pink in the right corner for example is lighter then the diagonal strip of dusty pink, but it works. I also prefer working on ghans that aren't patterned. Fits my personality better, lol. iT'S oriented differently here, but this is what it looked liked as I was designing it. I've named this one Summers End. Had a hard time coming up with a name; but thought the darker dusty rose, the darker green etc looked liked flowers at the end vs bright colors in spring when everything is new and fresh. Like all the afghans it will donated to Home for Families. Counting my pictures, it looks like I've made 106 of these over the years from donated squares, plus about a dozen that I made without donated squares.
I've read several of Mary Trumps book and have enjoyed them all. She really had to work at it coming from such a dysfunctional family. Her father Freddy one of 5 children of Fred Trump's (Donald's Father), had only room for 1 winner in his family, so the kids were pitted against each other constantly. Freddy was kind, sensitive and had his own interests other than his Father, Fred's obsession with real-estate. He wasn't cutthroat and vicious enough to satisfy his father, so Mary grew up watching her Dad be constantly humiliated by his father. That's what drove him to become an alcoholic. Her parents divorced and she had to find her own way. Much insight not just in retelling of her story (and The Felon's), but the added insight of a good behavioral psychiatrist. A good read.
Some memes I thought worth sharing.
Some folks are so creative when they make the memes.
Lord knows we need to laugh so we don't loose our minds with all the horrible things going on.
And who doesn't LOVE Kermit!!

These are 2 books I recently returned to library without finishing. I was 3 or 4 chapters in for both books, and just couldn't get into them. I was tempted to force myself to finish the 2nd book, "The Serviceberry" as it's only a 2 hour book; but NO! I see no reason spending time reading a book that's not enjoyable, or educational that you just can't get into. Clearly my opinion does NOT match others, as the 1st book was rated 4.32, and the 2nd book rated 4.38 on Goodreads. If you read either book, let me know what you're thoughts were. I only rated each of these books a 1 star, because you can't give them a zero.
LOVED this book! Put this on your list. It's a fascinating story about a very strong woman who played an immensely important role in FDR's Presidency. She was initially involved with FDR when he was The Governor of NY. She was a Hungarian Jewish Immigrant who advised FDR and was The First Woman to be Assistant Secretary of Defense back in 1950. This woman worked behind the scenes and accomplished so much for so many years, her story now needs to be known.
On the blogging front, you may notice my blog log decreasing in size/or numbers of blog names listed. as I've been deleted some folks from the list. Why? Because I like reciprocal blogging. You visit and comment on my blog, I always visit your blog and return the favor. In reverse, there are folks who no longer seem to be returning the favor when I visit them. This does not include folks who are taking a break for health reasons etc.
I have a few blogs that I need to remove, mainly as they have gone to the invite only thing. What a waste as far as I am concerned.
ReplyDeleteMan, you are really moving right along with the blankets. Love the colours in this one.
God bless.
Totally agree with you about the invite only thing, seems to me that defeats the purpose of blogging.
DeleteHello Sandy! What a lovely blog you have! I was part of a crochet group. One was asked to send in one completed square and Sybil would put them together for afghans for charities. That was fun to do! I love non fiction but many of the non fiction ones leave me cold even if everyone else loves them! That is interesting, the book about the woman who was such an influence on FDR, my kind of book! Thanks for visiting my blog, much appreciated. Best wishes!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the visit back Kay, will add you to my blog log. Let me know if you read the book, love to know what you think of it. I found her to be fascinating on many levels.
DeleteHello Sandy, thank you so much for visiting me today on my blog and for your kind comment. I am now following your blog. I love the colours and patterns on your afghans. I have never read 📚 any of Mary Trump's books yet but I will definitely see if my local library here in Montreal has any. The Confidante looks like the type of book I love to read. I love non fiction and I am currently reading a book about the people that Oskar Schindler saved during WWII.
ReplyDeleteThank you Linda. Will get you added to my blog list. Would love to know the name of the book you're currently reading, sounds like one I would enjoy.
DeleteHi Sandy, the memes you shared here made me laugh 😃 You have a very nice blog 😊 and thanks once again for visiting me; I post twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays. I look forward to getting to know you and will follow your posts.
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed the meme's. We have to keep our sense of humor in these crazy times.
DeleteNice afghan, I like all the different colours. My wife made a few shawls and hats with different coloured squares and people always stop her and ask if she made it. I always give myself 50 pages to decide if I will read the book. No use forcing yourself if you aren't in to it. Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteInteresting way to limit yourself a certain number of pages. Not sure how many pages I did; but a couple of chapters. Thanks for your kind words about my afghan.
DeleteAnother lovely afghan. You've made so many and each one is lovely.
ReplyDeleteThank you Bless, chipping my way through all those donated squares. Though it's harder to work on them during the summer.
DeleteThere are many books I do not finish. So many good books out there, why waste your time!
ReplyDeleteTotally agree on the books. Thanks for swinging by.
DeleteWow! That is an amazing number of blankets you have made over the years and all for such a good cause.
ReplyDeleteTrying to maintain a sense of humour and to laugh is very important and your little memes made me smile today. Thank you, Sandy.
I will put 'The Confidante' on my ever increasing book list and look out for it in the library.
Have a great week.
Thanks so much for your kind comments. My husband laughs and says it keeps me off the streets, lol. Everyday I wonder how much worse things can get and I keep hoping someone will have the guts to stand up to him and stop him.
DeleteLike you I see no reason to read books that don't hold my interest. Life is too short.
ReplyDeleteSorry that your Irises were disappointing this year.
Hopefully the lilies make up for the Irises and bloom abundantly.
Fingers crossed on the lilies, chased a deer away yesterday that was munching on them. Let me know what you think of the book once you've read it. I found it fascinating. She was incredible.
DeleteI've watch a few video on the mental health of Donald Trump. They all bring his father Fred, yet I haven't seen one of his mother, Mary Anne MacLeod Trump.
ReplyDeleteHis mother wasn't around much from my understanding. She was in a facility for mental illness a good deal of the time. So perhaps, he's inherited it? His father was a horrible person and he's probably worse.
DeleteI had to look up 8647 the first time I saw it. Honestly, that administration beggars belief, and the orange one's behaviour at West Point was disgraceful.
ReplyDeleteI always used to force myself to finish books I'd started, but no longer do it. Let someone else enjoy them!
Right you are, The West Point Speech was disgraceful on so many levels. Even knowing he's a jerk, he outdid himself with how low he can go. Glad I'm not the only that doesn't force myself to read the whole book.
DeleteHow incredibly generous, creative, and productive you are to have donated 106 afghans, Sandy. You're a sweetheart.
ReplyDeleteThat meme with MTG and Kermit - I laughed out loud! Love it.
Keep a smile.
Thank you. It gives me something to do and no one in my family needs anymore afghans so it a double bonus. Glad you enjoyed MTG and Kermit, I really liked that one as well. We have to maintain some humor so we don't loose it.
DeleteLike you I find it hard to not finish reading a book especially as the author has worked hard in writing it but sometimes you just have to give up on them and I've done that twice recently. It's always good to find things that make you smile:)
ReplyDeleteRight you are about the books, and the need to smile. We have to hold each other up with humor to get through the day.
DeleteWow, Sandy - 106 afghans! That's 106 people you have helped, which is fantastic. Many congratulations! Life is too short to finish a book you don't like or can't get into - I agree with you there.
ReplyDeleteHave a good week
Best wishes
Ellie
Thank you Ellie. I enjoy making the afghans, and don't need anymore myself, nor does my family so it's a win win. Life is too short indeed to force reading a book that isn't getting it done for you.
DeleteHi Friend,
ReplyDeleteThank you for the laughs. ;-)
I love the afghans and your generous heart.
I always appreciate your book reviews.
Carla
Thank you Carla, appreciate your kind words. We have to help each other with the laughing so we don't loose our minds. Let me know what you think of the book The Confidant if you read it.
DeleteSandy thanks for coming back to I tried to link but it was FB. I love your squares. I'm currently 'working' on an extended project. 63 different crocheted stitches in 7" squares. We shall see how far I get.
ReplyDeleteHope to have a picture once I get a few done.
Hugs
Cecilia
Thanks for swinging by, always appreciated. Will be anxious to see your project come together. Years ago I did a sampler afghan, sounds like what you're doing.
DeleteThat’s an amazing amount of afghans Sandy. This one is very pretty. A very worthy organization you donate to. Love the fact that you give them away and shows a good heart. I also enjoyed your books as I am always looking to add to my own list, though I haven’t picked up a book in a while and I need to get stuck in again. As for what’s going on out there, an absolute nightmare. I am aghast at the blatancy of it all.
ReplyDeleteWhat's going on in the country is a nightmare, just like you said. I enjoy making the blankets and didn't know how many I had made until someone ask me the other day so I counted the pictures.
DeleteYour blanket is looking really lovely.
ReplyDeleteI have a problem which I have probably mentioned before re blogging list of friends.
I'll tell you that problem - I have you in my blog list the URL I put in is correct but if I click on it it goes to another blogger who doesn't blog any more and with the sae named blog as yours, and also shows up on my blogger list as being 8 years old. So I don't know, I'm lost on an answer for that. Any ideas?
I've not had that problem, but have noticed that when I click on someone on my blog list it doesn't always change the color of the link. It used to always change colors which was helpful because you knew where you had visited and where you hadn't. Now it only seems to work on some of the blogs. No idea why. I think if I were you I would do a cut and paste of my blog, then delete it on your list and start over. I've also noticed once you paste the link into the url space you have 2 options to title it. Click on the first option which automatically names it.
DeleteHello Sandy. Thank you for your reply here and on my blog, I've answered there.
DeleteThat's a lot of afghans! This is another good one.
ReplyDeleteHi there! Thank you so much for your lovely comments on my blog! You are doing amazingly with your afghans and the colours are lovely. Enjoy the weekend! Sal 😁
ReplyDelete...Serviceberry, which has common names, if a favorite tree of mine. Sandy, thanks for the chuckles, it's better than crying.
ReplyDeleteI am all about the memes these days. I'm in a women's right leaning FB group and every Monday is Meme Monday. I always look forward to it, especially the ones that make me laugh! Thanks for following me!
ReplyDeleteBest wishes to you and yours. God bless always.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the book recommendations and the memes. I can't believe how upset they are about 8647 when there are so many 8646 items out there on the internet. The hypocrisy is too much sometimes. Take care.
ReplyDeleteHi, Sandy! Thanks for checking in on me. I've not been blogging very regularly of late. Consuming news, not a very healthy or joyful endeavor, has taken up much of my free time, unfortunately. As for No Kings Day, I imagine I will be out demonstrating with others who have had enough of what is happening. Be well, Bea
ReplyDeleteYou are nothing if not industrious, Sandy. The afghan
ReplyDeleteIs beautiful. I am a little surprised to read your verdict on “The Serviceberry.” I haven’t read it so I can’t comment, but Robin Wall Kimmerer’s “Braiding Sweetgrass” was superb. It’s hard to believe that she could produce a dud!
Mary Trump provides tremendous insight into that dysfunctional Trump clan, doesn't she. And I love those memes you found!
ReplyDeleteWow, I knew you'd made a lot of afghans but I didn't realise it was that many. How lovely that you've helped so many people. I agree about books, I don't think you should feel pressured to finish a book if you're not enjoying it, though I have to say that I choose what I read carefully because I do like to finish a book if I can.
ReplyDeleteHi Sandy thank you for passing by my blog and leaving greetings so often I really appreciate it, I haven't blogged for ages because of health reasons and family matters but I will be back, I would never abandon my blog completely. Your afghans are amazing and will be much appreciated by anyone who receives one, take care. xx
