Swinging

How do you like to go up in a swing,
Up in the air so blue?
Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing
Ever a child can do!

Up in the air and over the wall,
Till I can see so wide,
River and trees and cattle and all
Over the countryside--

Till I look down on the garden green,
Down on the roof so brown--
Up in the air I go flying again,
Up in the air and down!

Doesn't this look fun? I always loved Robert Louis Stevenson's book of poetry for children when I was young. This poem was my favorite. It was likewise for my daughter when she was growing up. We'd recite it when she was swinging. This little adorable toeheaded guy isn't still a minute and is my pseudo grandchild. I've recited it to him and it brings back fond memories.

He's too young to write about his fun on the swing; but I plan to keep him talking about it.

Do you have a favorite poem from your childhood?

  1. Adorable child you got there.
Alas so much of my childhood memory was erased from a long brain concession in 1968 . I do know I have always loved to read & used to read prose in my English class. Even wrote some poems .I know this because an old forgotten class mate showed me one of our school papers with a poem by me titled "spring ".
    I did enjoy your poem.

  5. Thought I'd pop back in, having just watch this little one again on the swing....in his jammies. He loves his jammies and didn't want to get dressed. What fun it is watching him.

  6. Shel Silverstein was my all-time fave! His poetry for children is absolutely timeless and transcending of age. Sarah Cynthia Silvia Stout would not take the garbage out... o the memories! And what is absolutely magnificent is how relate-able his poems are... genius!
