Gearing up with Projects Galore, 2025 Has Arrived

The color on this ghan is a bit off.  I brightened the picture as it was a dark gloomy day and there just wasn't enough light to get a good picture.  The squares are sized, edged and tied together.  I just need to crochet it all together.  Should get it finished in a day or two.  Calling this one Crayons.  The teal looking squares in the picture are actually Kelly Green

This ghan is knitted, the yarn is called Pastel Tulips, so I guess I'll use that name for it.  It's hard to see the colors in this yarn, believe the colors will show up better as the afghan grows.  It's currently 7 inches in depth and I've used 5 or 6 of these little skeins.  Doing the math, I hope I have enough to make this a square afghan.  It's super bulky yarn so it quite solid in it's feel.  I'm using a size 10 needle, probably could have gone with a size or two higher; but went with what I had on hand, as I was beginning to pack for our winter away.  Started this in the car so I would have a small project that suited car travel.  I plan to work on it in between working on assembling the afghans (pieces parts) I brought for the duration.  Both ghans will be donated to Homeless Families Shelter.

This is book #6 in The Bess Crawford Series.  Home on leave, Bess is asked to accompany a solider to Buckingham Palace to assist in his care in the wheelchair.  Is he faking his injury?  Has he simply vanished, or was he kidnapped.

Book #7 isn't available as an audio book, and it's quite small.  I didn't see it listed until I was several books beyond this point.  The Maharanr's Pearls.  In retrospect, it didn't seem like I missed anything, as there are references enough in each of her books to things that happened before in the series.

This is book #8.  Visiting a family friend Bess is met with open hostility, but why?  100 men were killed in a mill explosion years before, but why now are people being blamed?  Pitting neighbors against each other, a man is arrested......but is it the right man?

Book #9 A  badly wounded solider is found wearing such a tattered uniform no one can tell if he's English, French, or German.  He doesn't speak, but one night making her rounds, he screams out in a dream.  Bess thinks it sounds like he's speaking German.  But, how will they find out who this solider is?

If you're my age, you well remember this horrific day in Ohio.  And depending on your political views at the time there are several views about what happened that fateful day.  AND remember news wasn't 24 x 7 back then; nor were there as many options for getting your news.  To this day, I still get cold chills and will NEVER be able to forgive Governor Rhodes for sending armed guards to the University.  I've often wondered if the person who fired the first shot ever admitted to himself that he did it.  Did those around him know who fired the first shot and never came clean?  Did they band together to cover it up, like so often happens today with good cops covering for bad cops?  May 4, 1970, I was just out of high school, now as a 70+ adult, I found this an important read.  I had friends, and classmates that attended Kent State.

  • I hope everyone had a good holiday season.  Our daughter was able to come home for both Thanksgiving and Christmas, so we had good visits.  There were large family gatherings for both occasions.  Including a visit from family living in Paris.
  • I was so saddened with President Jimmy Carter's passing.  What a true servant of the people he was.  I believe history will remember him for a long time to come as a good, kind and decent man who accomplished a lot.
  • I'm dreading beyond words to express, how I loath the fact that it's almost time for a convicted criminal to take the oath of office.  How far we've come from Jimmy Carter to the orange nightmare.  I will NOT be watching the Inaugural.  I believe this will be remembered as a very dark day in the history of our nation.

Go Buckeyes beat Notre Dame!  This was our set up for one of the cold tailgates awhile back.  Inside our partial enclosure is a propane heater.  The last couple of games in the playoffs have been fun to watch, as well as bit nerve racking.  National Championship Playoffs...one game to go.
  • I've restarted doing planks, wow really starting over after too long.  I started with 30 seconds x 3 repeats with 6 seconds between, and have in recent days been able to up it to 30 seconds x 4 repeats, but I did increase the rest period between to 12 seconds.
  • I'm back to doing my leg lifts 50 x 2, and hope to raise that to 3 repeats in a few more days.
  • I have planned to get back into walking, but frankly the weather has been an issue.  Even though we left Ohio for the winter, this cold snap across the country has hit SC.  Hoping that passes soon

  1. Both your new ghans are looking lovely, Sandy. Thank you for deciding to donate them to the homeless charities, who I know will make good use of them. I need to do some knitting or crochet this year but I can't decide which project should come first :-)

    1. I donate all the afghans I make to Homeless Families Foundation, been doing it for a good long while. My family already have enough afghans. I know what you mean about trying to decide which project to start on.

    1. Thank you Bill, love to know what you think after you read Kent State. I found it very emotional. Angry at times, mad at other times. Lots of emotion. Hope you also have a happy and healthy 2025.

  3. Well done on the planks and other exercise. It is toooo hot here at the moment. What exercise I do has to be early. Or late.
I remember Kent State. Such a tragedy.

    1. I often forget we have the opposite weather. We still have snow on the ground from just over a week ago at home. Lucky for me, I'm not home, so do have nicer weather. Yes indeed Kent State was a horrible tragedy, one not to be forgotten.

  4. Oh, I do like Charles Todd! Such bright project. So great to see you doing all this yarn love this winter! It's good to hear from you. πŸ’•πŸ’—πŸ’—πŸ’•some feedback from you comment (✿◡‿◡)Thanks for your perspective. Yes, if they do get out of the house (from their family) they tend to live longer together before marriage, but some of those do end in divorce..yet, afterwards, they get back together to live with each other. As I was writing this, I was wondering what people would think..especially what Axton said. Deep down I feel both want families they never had. And they have been hurt by past relationships. Still, I feel Oliver would be reluctant to start of anything with his high school friend Gabby.
Thanks again for reading and your comment. I appreciate it very much.

  6. Now Crayons is a great name for that ghan. Love the brightness of the colours. Good for you on starting the exercising once again.

    God bless.

    1. Sometimes I have trouble coming up with a name for the ghans I make, but this one was easy. Crayons popped into my head from get go. We gotta keep trying with our exercise. Even if we stop and restart along the way.

  7. Hi, Sandy! I don't remember Kent State, but do remember reading about that horrific loss of life at the university in my high school history class. Hope all is well with you and yours. x

    1. You really should read the book, since you didn't live it; it's an important lesson for us all. I fear with trumpie being back in The Whitehouse, and his wanting to control/jail/arrest protests something this horrible could happen again.

  8. You're on a roll with the books. I'm doing great with walking every day but need to add more simple exercises at home, especially to build up leg/core/arm strength. Nice work on the blankets. Kent looks like another book I'd like to read. I'm very interested in learning about the history of this world and current events than escaping into fantasy. More people need to wake up as far as I'm concerned. And speak up. And rise up. My mom is from Ohio, but she married my dad who was from Mississippi so we always lived in the south. After they divorced, she tried moving back up north but found she did not really like the cold and snow anymore, so back down to Mississippi she went. :) And now I live very, very far away in a desert country. Best wishes to you and yours.

    1. Totally agree with you about reading about history vs fantasy. So much is going on and we need to know and understand the historic ramifications. If more people did, they certainly would not have let trumpie back into The Whitehouse. I fear many will suffer from another go round of his toxic hate.

  10. You've been busy making fun stuff and doing lots of interesting reading. Notre Dame defeated my DH's favorite team as he went to Penn State, so I hope Ohio can pay ND back.

    1. Too bad Penn State didn't beat ND, would have had 2 Big Ten teams and no SEC teams which would have been fun. Go Bucks.

  11. I sure never forgot Kent State. The things I saw happen on live tv also haunt me. Such as JFK's assassination, Chicago's riots during the convention...MLK's marches, Vietnam protests and nightly news from VN.
    Shivers.
Good to see you are back at it!
I know harsh weather is tough on walking.
    Go you!

    1. Totally with ya on seeing so much horrific stuff happen right before our eyes on TV life. JFK's, MLK, Bobbie Kennedy, Race Riots, Vietnam etc We experienced a lot. It troubles me that we're going backward to times that weren't as great as some people like to talk about.

  12. Thanks for a great selection of books. I wasn’t living in the States in 1970 but heard about this horrific event. I remember feeling so shocked when it came on our news. Your project looks great and wonderful that you are donating them. Sounds like you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and Christmas. I watched part of the funeral service and it looked like a fitting send off. I was very impressed with his grandson’s tribute. I remember his inauguration and seeing him with his dear Rosalynn walking up Pennsylvania Ave on the TV. I actually saw him greet a foreign dignitary in the White House Garden a couple of years later. Hubs was working at the Pentagon at the time, reason for the invite, one of many I hastened to add but it was memorable for me and I thought of this at his funeral. Hope you keep warm and cozy. We will be getting more snow on Monday.

  13. That's so cool you actually got to see him greet a foreign diplomat. I think history will remember him kindly. He certainly gave his all. I continue to work on projects, and hope we all can get through these next 4 years; but am truly very worried about it.

  15. You are definitely on a roll with both the books and the afghans. I always enjoy finding out what names you give the afghans too - I am sure Crayons will find a good home and be much enjoyed. The world is full of unrest politically - all we can do is take each day as it comes and make the best of it.
    Best wishes

  21. So good to see your work. Lots of knitting. I think you are much better than I am and celebrate your wonderful afghans for donating. I do remember Kent State and the following demonstrations at other Ohio colleges shutting down before finals. . (I only lived an hour away from Kent State. ) It altered the colleges my family would let me choose to attend. But I also very much agree with your remembrance of of Jimmy Carter and all he has left his mark on. And I don't know what to add to your comments on the felon.

    1. The felon will cause much heartache for many, including the idiots who voted for him. We have to keep supporting each other to get through this mess.
