Merry Christmas, Outlander, Henrietta Lacks

Merry Christmas from my house to yours!  If you traveled for the holidays, I hope you were able to travel safely and reach your destination.  I know the storms across the country made life difficult for many.

Good headway is being made on my latest scarf/shawl (Outlander).  Took this picture a few days ago, but since then have finished the last section you see plus started the next section.  Hope to have it finished fairly soon.  But, things have been busy with the holidays and darling daughter's visit...........sooooooooo, we shall see.

Finsihed this book awhile back, a change from my typical World War II books.  The story is fascinating, entertaining, and sad all rolled together.  It'a s true story, and sheds light on why  many Black Americans lack trust in medical science.  I encourage you to read or listen to this if you haven't already.  I loved listening, due to the language variences used.  I recently read an article indicating a statue of her will be placed in Roanaokes Henrietta Lack Plaza, to replace a Robert E. Lee monument which seems very appropriate to me.  Bruce Cobbs designed the statue.

  2. I enjoyed the book as well. Following the family as well as the medical application and its passage to other facilities was interesting. While she ( or her family) was given no knowledge of how valuable her tissue samples were, the doctor did not receive any financial or other awards for its usage. I hope the monies gained from the sale of the book have given many of her descendants opportunities. Love all of your knitting!

    1. Totally agree with you in hoping the family got some money from the sale of the book. What John Hopkins and the Docs did was so wrong. So glad a memorial is finally being erected to honor this woman.

  3. After reading in your post about Henrietta Lacks, I 'googled' for info on her. Very interesting story about her cancer cells and their great contribution to research. She definitely deserves a statue, and her family money compensation.

    2. Hope those scarves are coming along. I'm working on my third and fourth one at the moment. If only, I had known what I was doing wrong back in September I would have had plenty for gifts. Still, not enough moisture here. Just a dry cold. Hope you are gettting a lot done and some great reads too! Oh, and happy yoga too❤️ Thanks for your comments too!

  6. Hello,
I hope you enjoy your last week of the year. You are right, the weather was nasty for any of us who had to travel, which we did. We did rearrange some plans. We are thankful for the time we did get to spend with family.
    Happy New Year,
    Carla

  11. I recall watching a snippet on the news about H. Lacks' incredible story and very much felt for her family. To replace Lee with Lacks is the least one could do. Be well!

    1. Right you are Bea, replacing the statue is as least one thing we can do. So much is owed to that woman and her family.

  12. Nice scarf. I have seen reports on Henrietta Lacks and will have to put that book on my list to look for next time we travel. (Very limited options when trying to find books in Kuwait because of censorship.) Thanks for visiting my corner of the world. All the best for the holiday season and the new year.

  13. I read Henrietta Lacks when it came out a few years ago. I am a pediatric nurse practitioner who cares for patients of many different ethnicities and it really opened my eyes to why Blacks are distrustful of medical providers. It also broke my heart to think of how she was taken advantage of. Ultimately though, her cells have benefitted so many! Such a thought provoking read, wouldn't you agree?

  25. I thought this book was stunning -- in the sad and terrible story (which was new to me) and in how well the book was written.... I saw your comment on one of Tom's posts and knew from it that I would like your blog!! and I was right. (LOL, I was trying to catch up on old posts of blogs I already read but I couldn't resist visiting a new one when I saw your comment!)....... I see in your later post that you are snowbirds but couldn't see where you are. (That dinner looked wonderful.) We are in Florida for the season.
