Going Backward is no Fun

I feel like the Texas two step....going backward with my work on this Iris and Lillies Afghan.  All squares have been edged with various rows of purple.  I'm using a different joining then I typically do.  Normally I tied the whole ghan together and crochet all the way across and or all the way up and down.  But, that means you have to have the whole ghan on your lap at one time.  I needed this to be a bit portable...so decided to work in blocks of 4.  Plus felt it just wasn't quite wide enough at only 4 squares across, so by joining the 4 blocks and adding extra rows I could gain another couple of inches.  So first block of 4 done, 2nd block of 4 done, and when I went to join the 2 blocks of 4.......they weren't in the right order!  Somehow I had flipped them and couldn't maintain the diagonal design.  Kept moving the 2nd block around to see if I could use it as it was elsewhere in the ghan to avoid frogging it....to no avail.  I've added enough rows that it was probably 3 oz of yarn worth!  ERRRRRRRRR

But, it had to be done.  So, I redid the 2nd group of 4, and now have those 2 blocks joined.  I think I'll be happy with the additional width I've gained.

Flipped this around, thus the strange angle but thought you might better see the difference in width I'm talking about.  This is the way I see the ghan being used, but had to take the picture the other way at the time.

I'm in need of unknitting several rows on my DD's green sweater also, just haven't brought myself around to doing that yet.  Going backward on 2 projects at the same time was just more then I was up to.

Year of Projects (11) links in tabs across the top of the page.  And Let's Get Social Sunday (9) in the meme tab.   Looking forward to catching up with everyone, as I've been a bit behind.

  1. This afghan is absolutely lovely. I know it hurts to unravel but in the end it's much better than finishing and knowing it is wrong. Whoever receives this should be delighted.

  2. It's lovely with the creamy edging. I'd like to hear more about how you join squares. I've only crocheted two modular afghans. For the first one I joined all the blocks in each row with sc, and then joined all the rows with sc, finishing with an overall once round in sc. The other was crocheted in strips which were joined by lengths of chain stitches that were slip stitched to the left strip, then more chain, then slip stitched to the right strip and so on. The result was a kind of open lattice. I'm considering a hexagon blanket but I'm perplexed about the best way to join those.

  3. Thanks Pauline and Minding for the visits, appreciate you both.

Minding it sounds like we've basically done the same with joining. Though because I'm often joining squares of different sizes from different people, it's not uncommon for me to edge one square with a row of sc and another square with a row of DC or the regular granny stitch or a combination there off to get things to fit together. In this case I joined the 4 squares like a cross...2 at a time, then did the edging...then joined the 2 larger blocks (made of the 4 squares) together.

  4. Grr to the whole undoing but it would have bugged me and I'd have done the same as you and undone it all. Hope your sweater works out when you get round to undoing it, your right sometimes one to undo at a time is enough. Not sure if my sweater pattern comes in adult size, I must look as I think your right it would make a good one and I'd like one also. I don't need much sleep but I am falling behind on catching up with my blog reading.

  5. Sorry you had to unravel....but looks like you are doing well now...love the colors of the afghan...I've made a few, but they are not my most favorite thing to make...and I have plenty of squares that need to go together...

  6. It's lovely! Of course, I wasn't involved with the "undoing" so I'm sure that very tiring and de-motivating. But once you're over that hump hopefully it will be clear sailing for you now.
I like the diagonal design of it and the colors are really pretty together. Good luck on the sweater! At least you know how to go backwards...I'm still not good at it and tear things back to the beginning and start over but I'm learning.

  7. Unknitting and frogging is never fun, but I guess its better than staring at something you're not happy with for years in your FO! That said, I hate frogging! All my sympathies...the afghan looks great though so hopefully that cheers you up!

  10. I seriously need to figure out how you're able to crochet those blocks together so that they line up right. You've got that skill mastered! The blanket looks great!

  13. I've joined things in the wrong order in sewing, but never in knitting (or crochet). It's so annoying! The blanket is looking great though, worth ripping out and rearranging.
