New Shawl, Looking into the Future, and Audio Books

Stumbled onto a picture of this stitch and liked the look of it, the texture.  It's called Broken Garter Stitch.  You use mutliples of 6 + 1.  I cast on 55 stitches.  The yarn is Ultra Alpaca (light) Berroco, each skein is 146 yards, and suggested needle size is 5 and that's what I'm, using.  The yarn is super soft, 50% Super Fine Alpaca and 50% Peruvian Wool.  I LOVE the color and feel of this yarn.  It's sorta tweedy, but basically solid in color which I think makes this simple texture show up so nicely.  This is the right side, you can see the raised stitch creating a stripe, AND

This is the wrong side where you see the stripe is recessed./dented.  Two non knitting friends said they like the wrong side the best.  What say you?  I'm making a shawl/stole, so in actuality both sides will be visible which will be fine in my book.

If you're as old as dirt, like me.......you'll well remember this cartoon show.  But, what you might not remember is how spot on it is.  Seriously, this showed aired in September of 1962 to July of 1963, and the characters referred to living in the 21st century.  Promotional materials for the show indicated it took place in 2062.  Food for thought.

Finished the purple scarf.  It needs to be soaked and dried and will be ready to gift to a care giver at my Dad's Assisted Living Center.  I spoke about her in the previous post. Didn't keep the yarn label, so can't tell you what the yarn is.  I've used this before and made myself a pink and green shawl, and a 2nd time made my friend a grey, black and white shawl with it, but don't remember the name of the yarn.  ARgh.

Recently finished listening to this audio book, and really really enjoyed it.  Highly recommend it.  A good friend of mine is listening to it now and is also enjoying it.

Just finished this book day before yesterday.  WOW!  It's fascinating.  Written by a life long Republican who admits he was part of the problem.  He worked for many Republican Campaigns through the years.  It's nice to hear that he's come to his senses, I just fear not enough people have.

There have been many books written about this amazing lady, but this is the one I'm currently listening to.  Thus far (just started it yesterday), it spends a  good amount oftime on her earlier life.  I knew her early life wasn't easy, but had no idea how dysfunctional it was.  Add it to your list, I think you'll enjoy it.

  1. I love books. Not listening to them, but holding them in my hands.
.just my personal preference. The one eleanor sounds great!!

    Love the purple scarf.

And, FYI...the bridge? It's not even close to completion.

    1. Thanks for the clarification on the bridge, must have misunderstood. I like the audible books because I can do other things at the same time, like knit, or do yard work, or go for walks. If instead I'm reading, I can't get those other things done. Thanks for swinging by.

  2. Gee... I was typing and it went away so if you get garbled comment, it might be from me! Eleanor Roosevelt is a hero of mine! Also, I bet Kamala's book is good. Your knitted pieces are beautiful! You know I remember the Jetsons, still waiting to Jet around and not be stuck in traffic like we are these days.

    1. I like the idea of jetting around and avoid traffic as well. Everything else seems to be spot on, so who knows...maybe in our future. Eleanor was truly an inspirational character. I've watched specials on TV about her, and now this book gives more background. Let me know if you read it and what you think.

    1. Do read it and let me know what you think. Learning about her younger years has been fascinating to me. Thanks for the coffee, sipping as we chat.

  4. While I like both sides of your shawl it is the 'wrong' side which draws my eyes - and makes me itch to stroke it.
I haven't delved into audio books. I like the feel of books - and also like being able to flick back a few pages. We got a television late - but I do remember the Jetsons. No flying everywhere yet but otherwise surprisingly accurate.

    1. Many people do like the feel of a book. I think I'm a slow reader, plus when reading I always feel like I should be doing something else; so listening while doing something else satisfies that for me. Give it a try and let me know what you think. The wrong side of the shawl may end up being my right side. You're the 3rd person who prefers that side and it does seem to show up more.

  5. I think the scarves you have made/are making are lovely and i was drawn to the wrong side of the teal one too. Who'd have thought the Jetsons would be so accurate?
    Have a good week
    Best wishes

    1. Thank you, and thanks for your thoughts on the wrong side. It seems to be the prevailing thought. Wonder why, given that the pattern marks it as the wrong side. I like both, but believe the wrong side shows up better. Right you are about how accurate the Jetson's were.

  6. I never thought about how ahead of its time the Jetsons was, and that was my all time favorite cartoon! Fun stuff.

Keep on stitching - the outcomes are beauties.

    1. Thanks Robyn for your kinds words, much appreciated. I can still partially sing the song from the Jetson, lol. Can't tell you what I did yesterday...but, those childhood things stay with you.

  7. We can only hope that more people realize how poisonous Trump was (and is) for the GOP and distance themselves from him and his madness.

  8. The Jetsons were sure right about a few things. Still a ways off on the flying cars though haha

    1. Right you are Pat, but wouldn't the flying cars be fun, and an improvement with traffic. Who knows if it will ever happen.

  9. I love the colour of the shawl you're knitting and I agree, I don't think it really matters which side is on show.

    1. I agree, it's interesting to me because normally which side shows really makes a big difference. This may become a new favorite pattern/stitch for me.

    1. I totally agree Retired Knitter. She was my pick long before the campaign and primaries began. Love hearing her speak, lots of good common sense. I'm an even bigger fan after reading/listening to her book. It seems likely to me that she'll be the next Presidential Hopeful, given Biden's age. But, with all these voter suppression laws the Republicans are instituting it's going to be a battle.

  11. I love both looks of the shawl. I also like the colors in the purple scarf. I didn't know assisted living homes could use scarves. I'm sure the recipient will love this one!

    1. The scarf is for a particular employee at the assisted living center, not a patient. She's facilitated facetimes with my Dad throughout the long year. Super sweet gal. My way of saying thank you.
