Girl Time Soon

Looking forward to a weekend with my DD soon and girl time. We only get to have girl time once every couple of years it seems, but we always enjoy it when we do. I can't say I ever had "girl time" in the same way with my own Mother when she was living. Things were different then. Parents worked, life was harder, household chores certainly took more time; leaving little time for frivolous things. Since Mom and I always lived in the same city, it wasn't like we had to travel to visit each other; but we didn't plan time together. She was busy with work before she retired, as was I. Then she and Dad were busy spending time together, as were my husband and I (plus I still was, and am employed). We talked on the phone alot, had dinner as a family, but I can't really think of time when just she and I went to lunch or dinner. We just didn't do that. Our interests too were vastly different. I do remember when I turned 30 (a very long time ago), a shopping venture; but it was just for the afternoon.

So what do my DD and I do when we have girl time? We always get a massage, and often a pedicure. I don't believe my Mother ever had either. One didn't spend money and time on things like that. As I said, different time, different interests. I've got appointments lined up for us both to have a pedicure and a manicure the day she flies in. Then I think we'll paint pottery, that's something we've done together the last couple of times we've had "girl time". She's quite good at it, and well...........I try. Though perhaps it's silly to have a manicure if we're going to be painting...hum... We'll do lunch, or brunch here at home before the pedicures or eat in the shopping center where the salon. If weather permits (and that's a big if given how lousy it's been now for some time), we might opt for Shakespeare in the park that evening. We both really enjoy that, and it's free! The Scarlet Pimpernel is playing, and it's one I've not seen before.

We have massages scheduled for Sat morning, so we'll most probably do lunch afterwards, and then hit a yarn store or two...yeah, she's like me, she loves looking at yarn. She also knits and crochets, just doesn't have much time for it. Then I have a feeling she'll want to hit the used book store. They don't have Half Price Books in St. Louis, and she LOVES books, she doesn't read them, she consumes them. lol

We've done our "girl times" previously in Baltimore (when she lived there), in St. Louis where she currently lives, and in Breckenridge when we were vacationing. This is the first time we've actually done it here..at home. Looking forward to it, though it will be brief; she's only here for 2 nights.

Do you do "Girl Time" with your Daughters? Did you do "Girl Time" with your Mother, or do you still?

This Daughter (DD), is very much looking forward to Girl Time with her Mama. It's interesting that you wrote this post as I was talking with my new boss and a mutual friend over dinner on Saturday night about how much I enjoy spending time with you and Dad and they were both (of very large 6+ children families) quick to say how they had never done Girl Time with their mothers, nor did they think that either they or their mothers would enjoy that. I thought, 'oh man, how sad' and then I remembered once again (for the billionth time it seems), how lucky I am. I'll see ya Friday, Mom!

  2. Hi Sandy,

No, didn't do things with that with my mom, I wish we had she is gone now.. It was a different time, I was young and immature...regrets..." I have a few" as the Sinatra song go.. my way..wasn't always the best way...

I remember you leaving a comment about the PH, I didn't see it either when I looked quickly...

Thanks for stopping in, enjoy your day...

  3. My daughter lives next door so we see other pretty regularly.

As to my own mother, I can recall going to a concert with her once (Ricky Nelson) and being surprised she wanted to do that but enjoying it very much. She had three younger than me and two older, so I imagine time alone with any one of us was hard.

  4. ahhhhhh, DD, reading that made my day, I too am really looking forward to our time together, and wish others enjoyed each other as much as we do.
    hugs

Faith, I undertand regrets. Though Mom and I could have done things, it just never occurred to me to suggest or schedule it. Like yours, mine is gone now too.

  5. Hi there, this is Kat from the Compound and to answer your question about pollinating your own blooms, you either take a small paint brush or Q-Tip and rub it in each blossom to cross pollinate. Thanks for visiting my blog.

  6. Thanks for your visit! I've been up to quite a lot actually. I just found out I'm pregnant again about a week and a half ago. I'm calculating I should be right about 6 weeks. Yikes! It was bad timing for sure, but the new little one will be very welcome and loved in our lives regardless. I'm not sure yet when I'm due, but I'm expecting to be due around the middle of February based on my non-professional calculations. Maybe (s)he'll be born on Valentine's day! I'll need an ultrasound in a few weeks to figure out a more accurate date.

I hope you have a great time when you get "girl time" with your daughter. I wish my mom and I could go for a massage and a pedicure. =) She lives in Tennessee and I live in Pennsylvania now, but we hardly got girl time together even when we lived close to each other. We occasionally went to the movies. We both have read a lot of the same books and sometimes the books we read were made into movies and those are the ones we enjoyed seeing together the most!

  7. HI SANDY,
I AM HAPPY TO SAY, MY MOM AND ME DID SPEND GIRL TIME TOGETHER, WE BELONGED TO A MOTHER AND DAUGHTER CLUB, WE WERE ALL CLOSE FRIENDS, AND NEW EACH OTHER WELL. WE WOULD DO ANY KIND OF CRAFT WE WANTED TO DO. I CROCHETED,
MY MOM TAUGHT ME WHEN I WAS 8 YEARS OLD. THERE HAD TO BE ABOUT 12 OF US ALL TOGETHER. WE PAID DUES, AND AT THE END OF THE YEAR WE WOULD ALL GO TO NEW YORK TO SEE A SHOW ON BROADWAY, AND OUT TO A SWANKY RESTAURANT LIKE TAVERN ON THE GREEN. WE DID THIS FOR YEARS, SHE IS GONE NOW, AND I HAD A GOOD FRIEND CARMEN, SHE AND I WENT OUT TO LUNCH ALL THE TIME. NOW I MAKE A NICE LUNCH ON WED. FOR MY DAUGHTER JACKIE AND ME....WE LIVE IN THE SAME HOUSE, BUT IT IS SPECIAL. HAVE A GREAT WEEK. RIZZI

  9. Wow, Sandy, this is getting spooky. I have a DD living in St. Louis, too! Incredible. Are we living parallel lives?

My daughters and I don't have any rituals, yet. We went to Galena IL last June and vowed to return every year, but it'll be a few years before we can get some time off together. They both go to school year round, now and only get a couple weeks off every year....just like working folk. Wish we lived closer to each other so we could spend more time together.

After Lee and I married, I had a few years "off" to raise the kids and it afforded me some precious time with Mom. She had suffered some paralysis from strokes through the years, and so we enjoyed going out for a drive once a week, just to get her out of the house a little.

After getting my young boys off to school, we'd just take off and drive around the countryside, usually ending up visiting areas where she used to visit when she was a girl, or visiting an old friend to chat a little. We always would stop for a sandwich somewhere before heading home in time for the kids returning from school. I really treasure those times we had now that she's gone.

  10. I'm jealous of you getting time to spend with your daughter...having three boys isn't the same. I miss my mother...we would do things together, but no massages or pedicures.

About the Debbie Macomber book...yes, I liked it. It's nothing special, but I liked the sentiment and it did end good. Love the audio books. Got four more at the library today, plus my middle son let me try out downloading one from the library to his MP3 player. It wasn't the easiest to do, but I did it myself (no help!) and now it's all set for me to listen to. I'm really thinking I need my own player.....one of these days :)
Do try the audiobooks...perfect for knitting and a whole lot better than the lousy summer TV programming :)

    Have a great week!!
