Knitting, Chocolate Martini's, Easter and What Are You Reading?

My newest project, scarf/shawl was casted on in the car on the way home from Hilton Head 2 days ago, on Friday.  The first 3 ish hours of knitting was all frogged.  I had planned to do a basic rectangle scarf/shawl; but the pretty colors weren't showing up with the longer rows.  So, on day 2 in the car on the return trip after frogging, I started anew.  This will be another asymmetrical scarf/shawl.  You see the colors so much better.  I have 51 stitches on the needles.  This yarn is soooooooooo soft, 460 yards of superwash Merino, hand dyed.  It's called Ode to Crescendo Copper Corgi from a Savannah, Georgia studio.  A bit pricey at $45.00 (a little more than I often pay).

Before it was rolled.  Thought you could see the beautiful colors here a bit better than the ball.

Buckeye scarf is completed and already gifted along with it's beautiful hand made scarf pin.......but, I forgot to take a picture before I gifted both the scarf and pin.  This picture was taken long before it was completed.

OMG!  Where to begin.  This book is frightening, maddening, and then some.  It is a true story of corporate greed, and corporate lies; as well as the age old workplace horror of women simply not counting.  Women worked in a watch factory, painting clock dials and watches with radium.  They were called "Ghost Girls", because they literally glowed from the exposure.  They got sick and they died, one after another and the company continued to lie about the danger.  Meanwhile the men who worked in the same factory wore protective lead aprons and none of them had been instructed to put it in the mouths and actually consume the dangerous poisons.  I first read (listened) to the book, then watched the movie that was came out in 2018.  The book is far more detailed than the film, and you learn far more about their lives and deaths and the cover ups than you do with the movie.  A MUST READ/LISTEN.

Did a fair amount of walking during my two weeks in Hilton Head, but only managed a wee bit of yoga, so am behind again with yoga and planks.  Just got back in town last night, and restarted today...by doing my planks.  The process is on going.

While in Hilton Head with girl friends (for our annual girls trip), we perfected making Chocolate Martini's.  This became our desert.

**Need to get back to the colorful corner to corner now that I'm back in town.  It didn't travel to Hilton Head with me, so has been resting on it's on here at home.

  1. I love those colours. And yes I read the Radium Girls - and was infuriated and ashamed of corporate greed - which I believe we encourage.

    1. Glad your reaction to the book was the same as mine. It's really bothersome. Thanks for the visit, always appreciated.

  3. I find it fascinating to see yarn in a skein and then see it knitted up, I still find it hard to tell how the colours will work until I use it. The Radium Girls sounds a hard read, so sad to think that human life was cared about so little.

    1. It was a bit of a hard read, but also inspiring as these sick ladies put up such a good fight against these corporate monsters. Agree on the yarn.

  4. I agree about the lovely colours - they are looking lovely.
I had heard about the Radium girls - like the 'Canary Girls ' working in the munition factories in WW1. They were expendable, like the soldiers. There is nothing to be proud of in the way they were treated and how little they mattered.
    Best wishes

    1. Canary Girls working in munition factories in WWI, is similar; though this seemed even worse to me...given how they purposely try to ruin women's reputations by putting things like syphilis's on the death certificates...out right lies.

  5. I wish I was a knitter--my sister knits. I just don't have the patience for it. I haven't read The Radium Girls but I've heard about it. Working in healthcare, I certainly understand sacrificing health for the workplace. While things have changed, it's still not a safe job.

    1. Yes, sadly people are still taken advantage of in the work place; but less so nowdays with more knowledge and protection available.

  7. Beautiful wool!! I wouldn't be a good knitter. I would be so reluctant to undo hours of my efforts. Good for you though, setting the bar high.

    1. It was hard to unravel the knitting, but the yarn is so pretty and it just wasn't showing up that way with my first pattern. So, I forced myself to do it, and am glad I did. The colors are showing so much nicer now. Thanks for the visit.

  8. Your wool is just gorgeous. I’ll bet it feels heavenly too - worth the extra $$$. Perfecting chocolate martinis sounds like a good life skill. ;-)

  9. Pretty colours of yarn. My wife makes shawls and afghans, hats and anything else she can think of. :) The book sounds interesting so I just put a hold on it at our library. Have a great week and thanks for stopping by my blog.

    1. I hope you're able to get the book from the library. It's really a must read. Glad your wife does so much knitting, she'll understand my feelings about yarn and high end fibers.

  10. I haven’t read a book for awhile. Somehow I have gotten a bit lazy with that. I enjoyed reading your blog about the Radium Girls. I think if I should start reading it I would get caught up in the life’s of those women. What difficult things people have had to endure against injustices.
Love the colors in your yarn. It must be a satisfying feeling seeing a project completed.
    Have a great week

    1. It's very hard not to get caught up in these woman's lives. They were pretty special ladies and paved the way for protection in the work force for many. Yes it is nice to complete a project.

  11. I need to put Radium Girls on my list. It was on my list, but somehow I never got to it. It just infruiates me to no end when powers that be take advantage of the health and safety of workers. (rant rant). It is heartbreaking. Now Chocolate Martinis sounds like something I could sure get behind!!!

  12. What an interesting scarf! I hadn't heard of an asymmetrical one before! I had not heard of that book, Radium Girls. I'll have to see if our local library has it. Yum on the chocolate martinis. That would be a delicious dessert! I have seen on menus espresso martinis but have not tried one yet. I'm actually reading the book you featured in your last post "Eli's Promise." It is good! I'm about halfway through it.

  13. Your description of The Radium Girls reminded me of the story of The Match Girls over here and also The Canary Girls, such appalling working conditions. I'm just reading light things at the moment as there is so much bad news around:)

    1. I understand about the need for lighter reading. I go through spells where I need to do that as well. Someone earlier mentioned Canary Girls. I'm going to have to look for that and Match Girls too.

  14. Hello,
The shawl sounds lovely, the colors are pretty. Your chocolate martini sounds like dessert, YUM. Hilton Head is a fun place. I have not read Radium Girls, I will check to see if my library has it available. I am reading The Tuscan Child by Rhys Bowen. Thanks for stopping by my blog. Have a great day and happy new week!

  15. Love your knitting! And so sorry we didn't get to see your Buckeye scarf. Being a Wisconsin transplant, I miss the Ohio colors. My hometown Shelby had the same colors and fight song. Hope this new scarf goes well; the yarn is so yummy. Maybe I need to perfect a chocolate martini???

  16. Radium Girls!!! And, it's a movie too? By what you've written, the book is better ...naturally.

Love your handy work. And to answer your question, no I haven't crocheted since I finished my pansy afghan.

  19. Oh, my goodness....I LOVE the colors. Of both, but especially the one you had to frog. I am currently reading Call of the American Wild: A Tenderfoot's Escape to Alaska by Guy Grieve.

I have Radium Girls on my watch list. But have noticed the book, too. Most times I think books are better. Though there have been a few fiction that have been really good.
