I don't like working with Cotton, Do You?

I don't like working with cotton. I find it hard on my hands, it doesn't seem to shape as well. I've used it to make a baby hat or too, several pair of booties some time back; and now a washcloth. I bought several skeins of colors I liked a year ago; but I have a feeling it's gonna stay in my stash for quite a while. I love using a cotton knitted/crocheted cloth; but I don't like the actual making of them.

Anyone else had that experience? Now that's it's cold, it's not really the right time to make items with it anyway; but...interested in your experiences.

Daughter likes green, so perhaps I'll find some nice green soap and add this to her Christmas gifts? Also don't like the way the cloth ended up. Just your basic corner to corner; but the decreases look sloppy to me.

  1. I'm not crazy about knitting with cotton either. I always feel that the item takes forever to dry, difficult to keep its shape, etc. I like knitting with very soft fibers such as alpaca.

  2. I'v never crochet with cotton yarn...but do crochet with cotton thread..which works for doilies and such...I don't mind the thread...though.

  3. I love to work with cotton at any time but have not done so in a long while. I think your cloth looks just fine. I have made a lot of knit washcloths and loved them. I guess it all depends on what stitch your using.

  4. I use Peaches & Cream or Surgar & Cream for dishcloths all of the time, & I don't mind it. I've never used it for garments though. I've made a hooded baby towel: http://bundlesoflove.org/DonnasHoodedTowelandWashcloth using Bernat Cottontots. It's real soft & washes & wears well.

  5. I just LOVE cotton!! I think it's from years of living in Florida when anything other than cotton was just too hot to have in your lap.

  6. I have cotton on hand to use when I run out of anything else. I have to keep my hands busy. I like the cotton because it works up so fast into whatever I am knitting or crocheting. I seem to always have dishcloths finished just waiting to be given as last minute gifts.

  7. I don't mind working with cotton, though I mostly work with acrylic or wool yarns because the items I make call for those generally. I have seen a few cotton afghans and it is on my want to do one day list. :-)

  8. Your post reminded me of the large bin of kitchen cotton I have up in my stash room. I don't mind working with it, but at some point, how many washcloths can I make? I really need to find some other patterns to use it up.

Your washcloth looks just fine. I've used that pattern, too, and I know what you mean about the decreases, but it really does look okay in the photo.

  11. I don't get to crochet much any more but no, I do not like working with cotton either. Besides not being able to move quickly with it, I've also found that, if working with a solid color, no matter how closely one pays attention to the dye lot (if there is one) it never quit matches.

**Hey lady** saw you on my blog the other day. Have sent you an email - the question is, do you read your email anymore or just comments?

Hope you have a Merry Christmas.

  12. cotton yarn does not feel good on my hands in the winter. I would rather knit with cotton in the summer.
